The subconscious is a general term for the programme within the human psyche that oversees the maintenance of life as a living organism — its automatic reactions, behavioural patterns, and all background psychic processes.
Subconscious is the synonym of unconscious, but emphasises slightly different aspect of psyche: the unconscious refers more to the repressed and the hidden, whereas the subconscious refers to background support. From an astrological point of view, both correspond to the Moon (although individual parts of the subconscious may be governed by any other planets, including the Sun).
