In astrology, planets are often divided into four levels based on their distance from the Sun and the symbolic depth of their influence.
- The Sun and Moon are considered personal planets.
- Mercury, Venus, and Mars govern our microsocial world — how we think, feel, and act on an everyday level.
- Jupiter and Saturn (and sometimes Chiron) operate on a macrosocial level, shaping our relationship to systems, structures, and society as a whole.
- Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto belong to the cosmic, or transpersonal, level. These are the outer planets — and their influence is radically different.
Invisible energies
The outer planets cannot be seen without special equipment (like a telescope). They symbolise invisible energies that still affect us deeply. For example, Neptune corresponds to X-rays and all kinds of subtle waves — including radiation. Uranus symbolises electricity. We don’t see these forces, yet they’re constantly shaping our reality.
These are powerful energies that cannot be easily controlled or used at will. Uranus, for instance, symbolises genius. But genius isn’t something you can decide to become — it’s unpredictable, spontaneous, and comes through you rather than from you. The same goes for Neptune and Pluto: their energies bypass the ego and challenge the illusion of control.
Why this matter for you
In your birth chart, the outer planets may rule key areas of life — specific houses, angles, or planetary configurations. When that happens, you can’t expect a “normal” or socially acceptable path in those areas. You’re being asked to go beyond cultural expectations and open your mind to a more cosmic perspective.
For example, if Uranus aspects your seventh house or Venus, do not expect relationships that count as “normal” from a social point of view. Most likely, either your partners or the very type of relationship will fall outside conventional social frames. Your partner may be thoroughly extravagant (if not an outright weirdo), or the very format may be unconventional — for instance, polyamorous rather than monogamous.
Difficulties and potential
Outer planetary energies are notoriously hard to integrate. They demand a deep level of self-awareness, emotional maturity, and sometimes even spiritual crisis. More often than not, these forces get repressed into the unconscious — which can lead to stagnation, inner confusion, or the haunting sense that you’re not living your true purpose.
However, even slightly unpacking these energies can radically transform you — and your perception of reality. That’s why in our school we pay special attention to outer planets and create a system that lets you learn how to deal with such energies.
