Formulating your life Purpose/personal archetype

💡 This page provides a step-by-step guide to formulating your life purpose and exploring how it manifests in real-life events. This is the first step toward discovering your ideal career—one that aligns with your true nature and brings you deep satisfaction by allowing you to do what feels right.

Introduction

A life purpose is something that holds deep significance for us throughout our lives, from birth to death. It is not something that can be “completed” or “uncompleted.” In the end, we will live out our life purpose, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.

Formulating your life purpose requires an abstract language, as a concrete definition would no longer reflect its true essence. To help with this, we use the concept of a personal archetype. A personal archetype is an idea or force that is crucial to us throughout our lives, one that doesn’t let go and continually captures our attention. It can be conscious or unconscious, but it is the core source of our life force and what nourishes us. The closer we get to understanding our personal archetype, the more meaningful our life feels.

Since our life purpose or personal archetype is important throughout our entire life, it also has deep roots in our childhood. The key to formulating it lies in looking back at our childhood and identifying the stories, fairy tales, or books that captivated us at that time.

In this exercise, we will attempt to define this personal archetype.

Excerise

Step 1: Identify. Think back to your childhood (or at least 10+ years ago). Write down your favourite characters, stories, fairy tales, movies, or books. Try to list at least five. If you have multiple, group them by similarities.

Example: Harry Potter, Gandalf, The Little Prince, Sherlock Holmes, Simba.

Step 2: Notice qualities. List the traits you admired in those characters. What made them stand out to you?

Example: courage, wisdom, curiosity, kindness, playfulness.

Step 3: Distil into one concept. Summarise these qualities into a single word or key concept that unites them. This will be your Personal Archetype.

Example: “Seeker” (curiosity + courage + wisdom).

Step 4: Reflect on long-term life programmes. Look at how your archetype has manifested in the big, ongoing programmes of your life: career, partnerships, friendships, hobbies, education, or spiritual path. Ask yourself whether it has been a strong guiding force or only a faint presence.

Example: The “Seeker” archetype might show up as a career in research, a partnership built on shared exploration, friendships with travellers and thinkers, and a hobby of studying foreign cultures.

Step 5: Recall concrete life situations. Now zoom in to specific moments where your archetype clearly surfaced. These can be conversations, decisions, or experiences that brought it to life and made you feel aligned with it.

Example: a deep conversation about life purpose with a friend, a transformative trip abroad, or the excitement of reading a book that opened a new worldview.

Conclusion

By completing this exercise, you have looked into your past and uncovered the deeper threads of your inner world. You have formulated your Personal Archetype and explored how it manifests both in long-term life programmes and in concrete situations. This marks the first step on the path to profound self-awareness and the unfolding of your inner potential.

The next step is to identify the astrological significations of your personal archetype. This will allow you to connect the symbolic with the practical — translating your archetype into a concrete life strategy and receiving specific, actionable guidance.
