A modern term not found in classical astrology, afflicted planet belongs to the professional vocabulary of contemporary practitioners. The idea itself, however, continues an old theme — planetary weakness and the distortion of its natural expression.
Interpretations
Interpretations differ. Some astrologers associate affliction with essential debility: a planet in detriment, fall, or, according to some, peregrine. Others focus on accidental debility — combustion, retrogradation, or other conditions that compromise a planet’s effectiveness. A popular modern view defines affliction through the absence of harmonious aspects.
Russian astrologer K. Daragan refines this idea, suggesting that a planet may be considered afflicted when it simultaneously
- has tense aspects without receptions;
- lacks harmonious aspects;
- and also suffers another form of debility — detriment, fall, combustion, or retrogradation.
Applications
In natal astrology, such a planet marks a vulnerable point in the chart — a place where life experience tends to concentrate its difficulties. In horary charts, it symbolises the weakest or most problematic factor in the situation. In electional astrology, an afflicted planet may even be used deliberately to weaken an opponent’s influence. In mundane astrology, it represents destructive collective forces that can cause damage but are ultimately fated to collapse.
💡 Important: the manifestation of any planet in the natal chart mostly depends on the level of one’s evolutionary development and the degree to which the planet is integrated. Read more about that: The essential dignity of planets does not mean dignity for a person.
