Exaltation is one of the principal essential dignities in Western classical astrology. It refers to the sign of the zodiac in which a planet expresses its qualities with maximum intensity, vividness, and contrast. A planet in exaltation shows heightened activity and a form of elevated, often idealised, expression. This state significantly strengthens the planet, although the manifestation may be less natural or stable compared with rulership.
General characteristics
A planet placed in its sign of exaltation demonstrates extreme potency and an enhanced ability to act. In some traditions, exaltation is considered equal to or even stronger than rulership; however, in mainstream Western astrology, rulership is viewed as the planet’s most natural and complete form of empowerment, while exaltation highlights certain qualities in a more dramatic or exalted manner.
Exaltation is counted as a major factor in calculating a planet’s essential strength. In earlier astrological systems, exaltation was regarded as strongest in a specific degree of maximum exaltation, with the influence later extended to the entire sign. The origins of these degrees are uncertain, and the surviving explanations are largely scholastic.

Historical origins
The system of exaltations is historically older than the scheme of rulerships. It first appeared in Mesopotamia, where planets were linked to particular stars and constellations in which their influence seemed elevated. Modern astrology has shifted to a zodiac-based structure, and the original stellar associations are now considered only indirectly.
